Nazaron Ke Teer Maare

Movie: Do Ustaad (1959)

Music Review by Samir Shah (India, 20/02/09)

Of the many great combines of playback singer/actor, a few reached the zenith. One such at the highest level possible was the Asha Bhonsle/Madhubala duo. Usually when a visual is played it consumes 90% of our attention, the audio a mere 10%. To fully feel and truly enjoy the song, please listen "gaur se" while viewing the video gaur se.

The opening sitar is endearing as she runs away from him...then from behind the palm leaves she starts firing the arrows...later when he twists her wrist the singer sort of screams in pain (as much as the song/format would allow), much later when she turns and spins unsteadily as if in a state of one being mildly inebriated as in love, the following voice matches up with very subtle undertones of "bahakna".

Gaur se dekhiye, gaur se suniye
...the whole song is loaded with similar streaks of brilliance.

Imagine, the song is recorded first and then the actor plays out. Such perfection! Mastery of the medium in which one is working. Creativity at its best.
