Hoon Abhi Main Jawaan - Song by Geeta Dutt
Movie: Aar Paar (1954)
Music Review by Samir Shah (India, 28/05/10)
So many different "Alas's" that life throws up all the time....
The opening notes on the accordion PRARARA followed by TUKTUKTUKTUKTUKTUK (the strokes probably on a violin/cello), indicate creeping in of age, surreptitiously, like an unwanted visitor. The feeling is quickly shoved under the carpet by thinking that all is well right now, in the present moment. That covering up is signified by the following been-like sounds. Again the accordion that follows the been is signifying the questions that life throws up... all the time, regardless...
The song is so sensitive and delicate that the slightest aberration from the theme will send the song crashing down.
Geetaji ne kya nibhaya hai...subhanallah !
At the end of the second antra she says "chunle muradon ke phool, beete na yun hi bahaar" in one breath. She could have breathed after "phool" but instead she has gone ahead and sung "beete na yun hi bahaar". Now, Haa consumes the maximum breath amongst all syllables. After a lipped Ba exhaling on Haa and then doing enough to make the R audible... that balance is so difficult. She has sung it with aplomb, style and grace, a genius. At the same place in the last antra the lyrics go "Mujhko Bahek Jaane De, Baatein Na Kar Hosh Ki"... see how the breath/energy is sucked by "ho" and what effect it gives to the expression of the word "hosh". That's the composition calling the shots !
Perfect singer - composer tuning to produce one rarest of rare gems...gets tears for you each time with renewed vigour.
The acting by Shakila and the picturisation by Guru take the song beyond the sounds, for once... Wholesome !
