Song: Haath Aaya Hai
Duet by Asha Bhonsle & Mahendra Kapoor
Music Review by Samir Shah (India, 07/05/09)
"Haath aaya hai jabse tera haath mein, chhaa gaya hai naya rang jazbaat mein" Asha-Mahendra Kapoor, film - Dil Aur Mohobbat (1968)
Asha starts ..."Haath aaya hai mmhmm hmm mmhmm" 1. Then repeats, "Haath aaya hai jabse tera haath mein, chha gaya hai naya rang ...."
There is a guitar piece before the first antara, where she goes "haath aaya hai aeye ae aeyeyeae" 2 followed by the guitar. After the first antara there is a sarangi piece, before that she goes "haath aaya hai aeaeaeaeae" 3 to sync as closely as possible to the sarangi piece that follows.
The second antara is by Mahendra "Dil ke jazbaat ko main na thukravunga" to which Asha goes "aaa ahahaa ho 4". Towards the end of the song at the same jagah she goes "ahaa haa haa" 5.
While 1 is about the feeling of having found a huge treasure, the 2, 3, 4 and 5 express different feelings very subtly. The best she has saved for the fag end of the song Aahaa haa haa haa. Gratified. It's the different variations of meaningless syllables used by her to express more than what words would. Minor variations, a little syncing and lo, it's magic.
She has stuck to the mood of the song throughout. No let up, no mistakes, no syllables out of place. Perfection incarnate.
