Churate Ho Nazrein Duet by Asha Bhonsle and Usha Timothy Music Review by Samir Shah (India, 06/10/08)
The song begins with strokes on a guitar (heralding the arrival of cupid), followed by a piece on the harp (surmandal). Twice. The harp symbolises the eyes (the mirrors of the heart). Twice for two pairs of eyes. Nazarein milna, cupid striking, jhukna, the fireworks have started. The ethereal (heavenly) piece on violins that follows, depicts the birth of the feelings of love between the two, spreading slowly, subtly but surely, like rosebuds blossoming into flowers, like dew drops forming on freshly matured rose petals; followed by sharp violins and harp, symbolising more episodes of eyes meeting, aggressively, with new meanings. The female starts voicing the feelings. In a low, almost hushed voice, which is strong, loud, definite, clear and at the same time love-laden, eager, expecting, challenging, defying, shy, longing and yearning, all at one time. The interlude music is on sax - The feeling of longing reaching the limits of patience. All charged up, waiting to burst.... (there is only one single harp piece now signifying the common feeling between the earlier separate two)... "agar beqarari na hoti, yeh haalat hamari na hoti...." she has made the first move, expressed her feelings, as if exercising her right, taking for granted that there is a similar feeling on the other side, even pleading. The following music piece is on Hawaiian guitar. The feeling of love has spread all over the place, encompassing all that is present, all pervading, deep and musical. The accompanying percussion with a krrrrr like sound (moving one's nails on the teeth of a comb) opens up all the layers which cover the heart, as if freeing it to feel the emotions of love.
The second antra ... "nashili nigahon ke sadke-he, that "he" is so crucial. The submission to the mood, the feelings; abject surrender. The first sax piece is repeated here, followed by the last antra and finishing off the song. The guitars, the violins, the brush on the drum set, the hawaiian guitar, the percussion, the sax pieces and above all the jaltarang and harp combinations in the fore and the far-back ground, playing mind boggling variations throughout the song depicting different messages expressed by the eyes. The singers' voices, the scale, the tone of the voice, all at the best possible. A very very rich song. FULL ! Infinite value. Enjoy. Hats off to everyone who has played a part in this rarest of rare gems. PS. Do not miss out on the huge but subtle erotic undertones (that is another story).
